Pavers vs Concrete vs Stamped

Paver patios vs concrete —
what Long Island contractors won't tell you.

The South Shore's sandy soils and freeze-thaw winters are brutal on rigid slabs. Here's how the three most common patio materials actually hold up on Long Island — from the crews who install and repair all three.

Patios & Outdoor Living Spaces

Dining · Lounge · Fire · Cook

Full patio and outdoor-living builds — zoned for dining, lounge, fire, and cooking. Hand-set pavers or natural stone, integrated walls, low-voltage lighting, and drainage engineered for winter.

Zoned design

Dining, lounge, fire, and cook zones laid out for how you actually use the yard.

Integrated walls

Seat walls, planter walls, and low retaining walls tied into the patio.

Lighting-ready

Low-voltage lighting conduit and step lights built in from day one.

Full drainage

Positive pitch, channel drains, and dry-well tie-ins where needed.

How large should my patio be?

For a 6-seat dining table, 12x14 ft. minimum. For a full dining + lounge + fire layout, 500–800 sq. ft.

Do you design or just install?

Both. On-site design and material selection are included with every estimate.

What does a patio cost on Long Island?

Most patios run $28–$55 per sq. ft. installed depending on material, cuts, walls, and lighting. Every estimate is itemized in writing.

Do I need a permit for a patio?

Ground-level patios usually don't, but walls over 4 ft., structures, and pool-area work often do. We handle Suffolk County permitting in-house.

How long does a patio build take?

A standard residential patio runs 5–10 working days including drainage and lighting rough-in. Multi-level projects with walls and steps typically run 2–3 weeks.

Interlocking Pavers

Cambridge · Techo-Bloc · Nicolock · Unilock

Interlocking concrete pavers laid on a compacted stone base with polymeric-sanded joints — the load-bearing, freeze-thaw-proof choice for driveways, patios, and walkways across Long Island.

Engineered base

6"+ compacted stone sub-base and screeded bedding sand — no settling.

Locked joints

Polymeric sand swept and activated — blocks weeds, ants, and washout.

Positive drainage

Graded pitch away from home; channel drains tied in where needed.

Authorized brands

Cambridge, Techo-Bloc, Nicolock, and Unilock — full-warranty installer.

How long do interlocking pavers last?

Properly installed, 25–40+ years. Individual pavers can be lifted and replaced without demoing the whole surface.

Pavers vs. stamped concrete?

Pavers flex with freeze-thaw and don't crack. Concrete cracks — the only question is when.

Do you seal them?

Sealing is optional. We recommend a penetrating sealer 60–90 days after install to lock in color and joint sand.

Can you match pavers on an existing patio?

Usually yes. We identify the manufacturer and series from the paver profile, then source a match or blend a complementary border so the repair reads as intentional.

Do you work in winter?

We install year-round when the ground isn't frozen. Base work and polymeric sand both need dry, above-freezing conditions, so we schedule around the forecast.

Concrete Pavers

Cambridge · Techo-Bloc · Nicolock · Unilock

Concrete paver driveways, patios, and walkways — engineered on compacted base with polymeric-locked joints. Factory-warrantied Cambridge, Techo-Bloc, Nicolock, and Unilock.

Factory-authorized

Cambridge, Techo-Bloc, Nicolock, Unilock — full warranty preserved.

ArmorTec / Enduracolor

Modern paver surfaces that hold color and resist wear.

Polymeric-locked

Weeds, ants, and washout blocked at the joint.

Design + install

Style, color, and pattern picked with samples at your home.

Concrete pavers vs. natural stone?

Concrete pavers are more consistent, easier to source, and generally cheaper. Natural stone is a step up in look and price.

How long do concrete pavers last?

25–40+ years, and individual units can be swapped without touching the rest of the surface.

Do pavers fade?

Modern pavers are color-through with UV-stable pigments. A penetrating sealer keeps the tone rich.

Are pavers more expensive than concrete?

Higher up front, lower over time — no cracking, no full-slab replacement.

Can pavers be installed over concrete?

Yes, if the slab drains and is structurally sound. Otherwise we remove it and build a proper base.

Frequently Asked

Answers before
you call.

01

How do I find the best paver patio contractor on Long Island?

Look for three things: a Suffolk County license number on the truck and estimate (ours is # 58161-H), factory-authorized status with the major paver brands (we install Cambridge, Techo-Bloc, Nicolock, and Unilock), and a written base spec — the sub-base is what fails first on Long Island, not the paver. Ask any paver patio contractor you're considering to put base depth, geotextile, bedding sand, and polymeric joint sand in writing on the proposal.

02

How much does a paver patio cost on Long Island?

Most residential paver patios in Suffolk County run $28–$55 per square foot installed, depending on paver brand, base depth, cuts, borders, and site access. A standard 400 sq ft Cambridge or Techo-Bloc patio typically lands in the $14k–$22k range with proper base and polymeric lock. We give a written itemized estimate on-site — no bait pricing.

03

How long does a paver patio take to install?

Most residential patios in Suffolk County run 5–10 working days from demo to final polymeric sand, depending on square footage and cuts. Larger multi-level projects with walls and steps typically run 2–3 weeks.

04

Do I need a permit for a patio in Suffolk County?

A ground-level paver patio usually does not require a permit in most Suffolk County towns (Brookhaven, Islip, etc.), but any patio tied to a structure, elevated deck, or built with retaining walls over 4 ft. does. We handle any permitting in-house under License # 58161-H.

05

Pavers vs stamped concrete vs poured — which lasts longest on Long Island?

Interlocking pavers outlast both. Poured and stamped concrete crack from freeze-thaw within 5–10 years here, and a cracked slab is nearly impossible to repair invisibly. Pavers flex with the ground, individual units can be lifted and reset, and quality brands carry a manufacturer's lifetime warranty on the pavers. It's why almost every custom patio on the South Shore is now pavers.

06

Will pavers survive Long Island freeze-thaw winters?

Yes — when installed on a proper 6"+ compacted stone base with polymeric-locked joints and positive drainage. Cambridge, Techo-Bloc, Nicolock, and Unilock are all rated for northeast freeze-thaw. The base is what fails on cheap installs, not the paver.

07

Can you install pavers over an existing concrete slab?

In most cases we remove and rebuild — pavers over concrete traps water, cracks the slab through, and voids the paver warranty. On rare occasions where the slab is structurally sound and drainage can be resolved, an overlay is possible. We give you the honest read on-site.

08

Do pavers get slippery around a pool?

Most Cambridge, Techo-Bloc, Nicolock, and Unilock pool-deck pavers have textured or shot-blast finishes rated for wet feet. We steer clients toward specific pool-safe lines (Techo-Bloc Blu 60, Cambridge Ledgestone, Nicolock Sea Isle) and away from smooth or polished finishes for pool surrounds.

09

What is polymeric sand and why does it matter?

Polymeric sand is a joint-fill sand mixed with a polymer binder. Once swept in and activated with water, it hardens into a flexible lock that resists weeds, ants, wash-out, and joint movement. It's the difference between a patio that stays tight for 15 years and one that grows weeds by year two.

10

How do I clean and reseal a paver patio?

Rinse and light broom-sweep is enough for most seasons. Every 3–5 years we recommend a wash, re-sand of any lost joints, and a fresh seal coat if you sealed originally. We offer maintenance visits on patios we've installed.

11

Are you licensed and insured paver patio contractors?

Yes — APM O'Neill & Sons is fully licensed in Suffolk County under License # 58161-H, with general liability and workers' compensation on every job. Certificates of insurance are provided directly to your homeowner's carrier or town on request.

12

Do you offer financing on paver patio projects?

Yes — approved financing with terms from 60 to 120 months, subject to credit. Most paver patio, pool deck, and driveway projects qualify. Pre-qualification takes about a minute and doesn't affect your credit score.

13

What Long Island towns do your paver patio contractors service?

We service Suffolk County's South Shore and central corridor — Medford, Bellport, Patchogue, Holbrook, Ronkonkoma, Sayville, Blue Point, East Patchogue, Bayport, Farmingville, Selden, Center Moriches, and neighboring communities. Call (631) 480-3238 to confirm coverage for your address.
